DEVELOPMENT funds should be revoked for MPs who do not declare their assets, said a deputy minister as opposition party PAS defies a Parliament ruling to do so.

Human Resources deputy minister Mahfuz Omar said this move would be possible because giving out development funds for parliamentarians is the prerogative of the prime minister.

These funds are different from the parliamentary allowances, which are paid out by the legislature and cannot be touched, he said.

He added that Parliament itself can amend other laws to revoke perks for errant lawmakers, such as a licence to import cars.

“I am suggesting that all perks be revoked, including the development fund regardless of whether they are opposition or government MPs,” Mahfuz told reporters today. – December 6, 2019.
