PAKATAN Harapan is a victim of its own success, said Amanah president Mohamad Sabu, as the democratic reforms it has implemented are now being used against the government.

Greater civic freedoms have allowed opposition parties to attack the PH administration in ways that was never possible under Barisan Nasional, Mohamad said.

“This is the advantage of PH, in that it ensures that a mature and dynamic democracy is only possible when the government can face criticism openly,” Mohamad said at the start of the Amanah annual convention in Shah Alam today.

“This is part of PH’s promise and conviction to be fair to all, including the opposition,” Mohamad said during his policy speech.

“It will not repeat the failure of the BN government in freeing the media and democratic space during its rule of Malaysia.”

“Before, you go on demonstrations, the next day you go to prison.

“However, under this government, there is no more of that,” he said, referring to the former BN government’s suppression of dissent.

Mohamad is among the scores of PH leaders who were regularly imprisoned when he was in the opposition before the 14th general election.

However, Mohamad admitted that many of the changes brought in by the PH administration have not yet been felt by the masses.

This is despite the fact that PH has fulfilled more than 60% of the promises in its Buku Harapan election manifesto, Mohamad said.

“The successes that we have achieved in two years are big and we will continue with the rest of the PH to fulfil our manifesto, rebuild the country and improve the lives of the people.” – December 6, 2019.
