MOHAMED Azmin Ali is currently attending a PKR political bureau meeting, a move seen as an attempt to thrash out differences with party chief Anwar Ibrahim ahead of its congress this weekend.

The PKR deputy president has assured that he will attend the party’s annual congress this weekend but declined to state which one when pressed by the media.

Rumours have been swirling since last week that there will be one assembly in Malacca, the official one, and another in Kuala Lumpur led by an opposing faction within the party.

“I am meeting PKR president Anwar and we will discuss the party’s situation and the congress which starts tomorrow.

“We will also discuss other important matters,” he told reporters at the parliament this evening as he headed for the meeting.

This is the first political bureau meeting that the Gombak MP is attending after he was re-elected as deputy president at the last party elections.

Azmin was accompanied by several PKR leaders including Zuraida Kamaruddin, Chua Tian Chang, Rashid Hasnon and Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari, who are his staunch allies in the party.

Earlier today, party sources told The Malaysian Insight that Azmin had been ordered by the top leadership to attend the political bureau meeting.

The political bureau will convene its meeting at Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail’s office in Parliament.

Azmin’s continued absence from party meetings is believed to be due to a rift between him and Anwar.

Others sources said Anwar will also take the opportunity afforded by Azmin’s presence to privately thrash out their differences, which are tearing the party apart.

A source said the outcome of the private meeting could determine if the so-called “alternative” PKR congress planned by Azmin’s faction to rival the national congress in Malacca would go ahead. – December 4, 2019.
