UMNO needs to build its strength in preparation for the next polls, said president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He said with its Barisan Nasional (BN) partners and new ally PAS, the public will be attracted to it.

“When there is sugar, ants will come. If we don’t have sugar, the ants run away,” he said in his speech at the Negri Sembilan Umno convention that is livestreamed today.

BN lost federal power in the last general election, only retaining Perlis and Pahang state governments.

Since then, BN has been buoyed by a series of by-election victories, the last being Tg Piai, which it won with a thumping 15,000-vote majority.

Zahid, who is also BN chairman, said Umno’s internal strength has to be built organically and not forced.

“We have to build our internal strength and it cannot be forced on our members.”

Zahid said Pakatan Harapan’s performance in office has been dismal for the last 18 months and the public is clamouring for BN’s return to power.

“The people are waiting. For them, 18 months seems like too long a wait for BN and its friends in muafakat nasional to take over.

“Eighteen months seems like 18 years.”

He asked the people to wait for BN’s return to power, adding it might not be a long wait.

Zahid said PAS has a pact with Umno with the interest of the nation at heart.

He likened the alliance between the two parties to that of a reunion of siblings. – November 24, 2019.

  • Please stay and remain as an effective opposition, that's the way to build your strength. Any greed for power will just bring you down the drain.

  • Tg Piah BE was a constituency poll and not a GE to vote the govt of the day. UMNO-PAS pact was not the determinant of BN victory as the majority of the Malays voted for Kamaine.
