CLOSED-CIRCUIT television footage at klia2 did not clearly show the two women accused of murdering Kim Jong-nam entering toilets, defence lawyers said, and following a visit to the low-cost terminal earlier today, and it was revealed there were more toilets than the court was initially told.
Prosecutors, defence lawyers and judge Azmi Ariffin were brought to klia2 today to retrace the path allegedly taken by both murder accused – Vietnamese Doan Thi Huong and Indonesian Siti Aisyah – as well as those of the murder victim Jong-nam, the half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un who died after being exposed to the deadly VX nerve agent on February 13.
During the tour, which took over two hours, dozens of armed police escorted the group that included Doan, 28 and Siti 25.
Gooi Soon Seng, lead counsel for Siti Aisyah, told reporters that the tour, led by investigating officer Wan Azirul Nizam Che Wan Aziz, revealed more toilets than expected.
“We went to the two toilet areas where they were said to (have washed the chemicals off their hands). Both were on the second floor.
“From the video cameras, it’s not quite clear as to the actual locations,” he said.
Present at the press conference were Doan’s lawyers, Naran Singh and Hisyam Teh Poh Teik.
“We have to determine for ourselves the actual routes taken and we also want to find out how many toilets there are on level 3 (of klia2),” Gooi said.
“There were many things not covered by the CCTV. At least we have the opportunity to note down the number of toilets on the third floor, and the number of CCTVs that were available,” Gooi said, adding that the group also visited the airport’s CCTV control room.
There are four toilets on level 3, where the departure hall is located, four on level 2, and a further two toilets on the interceding Level 2M.
The trial was told that both Doan and Siti went to the toilet on level 2. CCTV footage showed Doan holding her hands up and moving quickly.
Prosecutors said it was there that they washed their hands to remove the VX nerve agent.
“From the CCTV, we could only see the passage going into the toilet,” Gooi said.
“As far as Siti is concerned, there is no CCTV footage of her going into the toilet. So, at least we have to see the passage for ourselves and whether it led elsewhere.
“And why is it that the camera could only capture her leaving certain passages but could not show her entering that passage.”
The visit today also ascertained the routes taken by Jong-nam, from the time he came into the arrival hall till he went to the self check-in kiosk, where he was allegedly smeared with chemicals.
The group also visited the clinic where he was taken to, and the lift medical staff used to take him to a waiting ambulance that conveyed him to Putrajaya Hospital.
Both Doan and Siti were given wheelchairs about half an hour into the tour.
“They have to wear the bulletproof vests, which are rather heavy for them,” Gooi said.
“And we walked for almost three hours. It’s quite tiring for them. So, we requested for wheelchairs.”
Deputy public prosecutor Muhamad Iskandar Ahmad, who is leading the prosecution team, said today’s tour gave a clearer picture of what happened.
“The whole purpose is for us, especially for the court, to have a better understanding of the layout (of klia2), about the case, especially the routes taken by the accused, deceased and everything,” he said.
“All the while, we just saw the CCTV footage, and now we are here, we are viewing the actual facts, where all these locations are.”
Iskandar said no lawyers pointed out any discrepancies in the tour, which began at 9:50am.
The trial will resume tomorrow at Shah Alam High Court. – October 24, 2017.
