Sarawak police to boost border security after Indonesia capital move

POLICE may increase their presence at the Sarawak-Indonesia border following the moving of the Indonesian capital from Jakarta to Kalimantan.

Bukit Aman Integrity and Standard Compliance Department director Zamri Yahya said police anticipated the move would result in higher traffic at the border.

He said along with a hike in the number of people entering the county, illegal activities such as smuggling were also expected to rise.

‘’We will take early measures and ways to overcome them and may increase the number of personnel for the process of examining documents and goods at the entry point,” he told a media conference.

Meanwhile, Azman said violent crime had increased in Sarawak with 713 cases in the January-October period compared with 687 cases during the same period last year.

‘’The categories of crime cases which have gone up were armed gang robbery which had gone up by two cases, murder (3), rape (9) and unarmed robbery (31),’’ he said.

Azman said crime in the state was under control with 4,834 reported cases from January to October compared with 4,776 cases during the same period last year. – Bernama, November 18, 2019.
