DAP’S Pending assemblyman Violet Yong did not show up for a meeting with Sarawak special legal counsel J.C. Fong over her allegations of nepotism involving his family.

Fong yesterday sent a letter to Yong inviting her to the cafeteria of the state legislative assembly at 3pm today and for her to repeat all the allegations she had made in recent legislative sitting against him, his wife and daughter.

“It is very regrettable that she chose not to come… to face me although I assured her she would not be ambushed or harassed,” Fong said.

“She was bold in making the false and defamatory allegations against me inside the chambers because she knew that whatever she said in there is protected by parliamentary privileges, and I cannot sue her for defamation.

“I had expected her to be brave enough to turn up here and agree to waive her immunity, and on her own accord, repeat in full the allegations she had made against me inside the Dewan’s chambers on November 6.”

Yong had implied in her debate on the state’s budget that Fong’s handling in June 2018 of Petronas’ application for leave to commence proceedings against Sarawak in the Federal Court had benefited his daughter, Jacqueline.

The leave was struck out.

Yong said in the assembly that about a month after the court case, Jacqueline on July 30 “coincidentally” was appointed director in an oil and gas company Handal Energy Berhad, a unit of Handal Resources Bhd, that in June this year was awarded a RM360 million contract from Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd.

“So, on one hand, the father acted as legal counsel and on the other hand, the daughter was made a director one month after J.C. Fong’s hard work and contribution to (the) Petronas case,” Yong had said.

Fong said he wanted Yong to repeat all the allegations without the immunity protection she enjoyed as a legislator so that he would have the chance to let the courts decide on the veracity of her statements.

Fong said since she failed to show up, he would now consult his team of lawyers “to explore other legal options”.

Yong had complained that Fong’s wife, Annie, had harassed her in a special area reserved for legislators after the DAP rep made her remarks during the assembly.

But Fong said his wife had been present in the special area as a guest of the Speaker.

“She was not an intruder as she received the normal security clearance when she arrived with me.” – November 15, 2019.
