THE roof of a Kuching primary school canteen collapsed just after noon today, but there were no injuries reported.

All 875 pupils of SK Siol Kanan, and its 67 teaching and administrative staff reportedly off-site for their school sports day.

A report on the 12.50pm incident by the school headmaster Ismail Ibrahim seemed to suggest school authorities and the Kuching district education office were aware the canteen was unsafe, while he was afraid that such an incident could happen.

Ismail stated, one month ago, the school had issued an instruction for pupils to stay away from the canteen.

He also stated the school and education office had written a letter to the Public Works Department requesting a safety inspection be carried out.

The Malaysian Insight has contacted Sarawak Education Minister Michael Manyin but he has not yet made any comment. – October 18, 2019.
