THERE are no plans to introduce ceiling and floor prices for airfares as such a move is not feasible in a free market, Transport Minister Anthony Loke told the Dewan Rakyat today.

He said Malaysia was an open economy and it was best to leave it to market forces to decide prices.

“Yes, the government is aware of the problems related to the increase of air fares and we have also taken steps to mitigate the problem,” he added.

Loke said the government had encouraged airlines to offer more flights during the holidays as one of the mitigation measures.

“The government through various agency such as the MAHB ( Malaysian Airports Holdings Bhd) and CAAM (Civil Aviation Authority Malaysia ) will give the support required by airlines to schedule more flights during holidays and festive seasons,” he said.

In addition, airlines were also required to offer some seats at a fixed rate during the holiday season.

Loke added there were no plans for a low-cost carrier terminal anywhere at present. – October 16, 2019.
