BARISAN Nasional should field an Umno candidate in the Tanjung Piai by-election in Johor as this would ensure a win for Pakatan Harapan, said Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
“We asking that they place a candidate from Umno so that we can win,” he jested, after the Pakatan Harapan presidential meeting.
The Election Commission has announced that nominations for the parliamentary election will take place on November 2 and polling day on November 16.
The seat was vacated following the death of Dr Md Farid Md Rafik of Bersatu/Pakatan Harapan on September 21 due to a heart attack.
BN traditionally allots the seat to MCA to contest but this time around the local Umno division is also vying for the chance.
Bersatu meanwhile will be representing PH but it has yet to pick the candidate.
Dr Mahathir, who is Bersatu president, confirmed his party will contest the seat.
Earlier, DAP Tanjung Piai division chairman Yeo Tung Siong said that it had decided not to field a candidate in the by-election to maintain harmony in the PH government, even though the seat had traditionally been contested by DAP. – October 7, 2019.
