ANTI-GRAFT chief Latheefa Koya today took aim at politicians, accusing them of lacking integrity that is hampering the much needed reforms in the country.
Latheefa, who is the former Lawyers for Liberty director, told a regional law conference that politicians need to internalise constitutionalism and practice it instead of just preaching.
She said political leaders need to embrace constitutionalism instead of just giving pretty speeches about it.
She, however, added that these political leaders also lack understanding with regards to constitutionalism.
“The real problem now is to get these leaders to embrace constitutionalism before anything else is done,” she said in a panel discussion at the LawAsia Inaugural Constitutional and Rule of Law Conference in Petaling Jaya.
“For years, we saw these people take to the streets to advocate for free speech. Now these people are in power, they make police reports about people who criticise them.”
Latheefa said that she was not targeting anybody but was merely speaking as a former member in the PKR central leadership.
“With that position, I had the experience of dealing with many other politicians.
“My experience tells me that these very leaders needs to embrace constitutionalism,” she said.
“Both sides are the stumbling block. It’s across the board.
“Whether it’s PH or BN, constitutionalism needs broad support to become internalised.” – October 5, 2019.

There is an irony in this story.....
1. This Tan Sri Bustari was apparently Najib Razaks Business advisor
2. He allegedly received some RM11million in funds from 1MDB when Najib used to control the sovereign fund
3. MACC filed a forfeiture claim on Bustari for the return of the RM11million under the anti money laundering and anti terrorism Act.
4. Tan Sri Bustari is now making representations to solve the matter, presumably to return the ill-gotten gain.
5. Tan Sri Bustari owns public listed Petra Energy Bhd, which was awarded a 5-year Multi billion dollar contract by PETRONAS.
6. Question: Why is PETRONAS supporting this Tan Sri Bustari? Why is Petra Energy so special that it gets awarded billion ringgit contracts when the entire business deal looks so suspicious and controversial?
7. Does this mean that PETRONAS supports the previous government administration? What is Tan Sri Wan Zulkiflee, CEO & President, PETRONAS stand on this? And what about PETRONAS Chairman, Ahmad Nizams stand on the matter?
- what is the link between Bustari, Wan Zulkiflee and Ahmad Nizam.
- It is understood that PETRONAS Chairman, Ahmad Nizams son is a senior executive at Petra Energy Bhd.
- Is this the reason why Tan Sri Bustari hired Ahmad Nizams son - so that Petra Energy Bhd continues to get contracts from Petronas?
There must be a certain level of decorum and business ethics amongst companies. MI should investigate these claims so that business, in particular Petra Energy can regain the trust and confidence as reputable oil and gas company.
PETRONAS also should act in a more professional and sincere manner rather than behaving in a controversial manner. Perhaps, its time for a leadership change in PETRONAS.
