Let’s remove opposition leader post in states we rule, Umno tells PAS

Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan says if Umno and PAS now have an accord, it stands to reason that the opposition no longer exists in Kelantan and Terengganu. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, September 28, 2019.

THERE is no longer a need for the post of an opposition leader in states ruled by Umno and PAS, Malaysiakini reported Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan as saying.

Mohamad reportedly proposed that the post be removed following the alliance between the two parties.

“One of my proposals is to no longer have an opposition leader. We do not want to talk about positions.

“If we now have an accord, there is no more opposition,” he was quoted as saying at a gathering in Pasir Mas, Kelantan, last night.

Mohamad’s proposal is relevant only in PAS-ruled Kelantan and Terengganu, where Umno is the opposition.

Mohamad, however, did not elaborate on how his proposal would affect Barisan Nasional-led Perlis and Pahang, in which Pakatan Harapan remains the opposition in the state assemblies.

Present at the ceramah last night were PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man and Kelantan Menteri Besar Ahmad Yakob.

Umno and PAS inked their alliance charter on September 14, paving the way for their cooperation in facing the next general election.

However, last week, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang had ruled out the implementation of a unity government in states controlled by the two parties.

He said it was too early for that, adding that anything could happen before the next general election.

“We will work on our cooperation. We are more confortable with this. We need not rush into forming unity government at state level. We will see how this develops,” he had said. – September 28, 2019.
