FOOD poisoning has delayed Rafizi Ramli’s appeal against his 30-month jail sentence for exposing bank account details related to National Feedlot Corporation Sdn Bhd (NFC) and its chairman.

The appeal had been due to be heard at the Shah Alam High Court this morning.

Rafizi’s lawyer, Ahmad Nizam Hamid, sought an adjournment from judge Yazid Mustapa, citing the PKR vice-president’s health.

Yazid then adjourned the hearing to October 24.

“Rafizi last night informed me that he is suffering from food poisoning.

“His appeal has been adjourned, as he was unable to attend the hearing today. The matter will now be heard at 2.30pm on October 24,” Nizam told reporters outside the court.

On February 7 last year, Rafizi was sentenced to 30 months’ jail by the Shah Alam Sessions Court after he was found guilty, under the Banking and Financial Institutions Act 1989 (Bafia), of disclosing to the media the banking information of four parties.

Former bank clerk Johari Mohamad, 47, was given a similar sentence for conspiring with Rafizi to commit the offence.

Johari earlier withdrew his appeal in respect to his reference on the constitutional challenge to Bafia.

The sessions court had granted a stay of execution of the sentence, pending an appeal at the high court.

Rafizi was charged with disclosing documents comprising balance summaries relating to NFC, National Meat & Livestock Sdn Bhd, Agroscience Industries Sdn Bhd and NFC chairman Dr Mohamad Salleh Ismail’s bank accounts to media consultant Yusof Abdul Alim and The Star reporter Erle Martin Carvalho.

He was charged with committing the offence at the PKR headquarters at Merchant Square in Jalan Tropicana Selatan, Petaling Jaya, on March 7, 2012. – September 25, 2019.
