THE National Registration Department has lodged a police report over rumours it issued MyKad to Chinese nationals, which went viral on social media.

Director-general of NRD Ruslin Jusoh said at a press conference today the report was lodged at the Putrajaya police station.

“We have asked police to look into this matter and investigate the individuals spreading this fake news on Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp.

“It is not easy for NRD to issue a MyKad to anyone and there are certain requirements needed before one can receive a MyKad,” he said.

One of the fake news stated that the department issued five MyKad to five Chinese nationals.

Ruslin said the incident happened in 2015 involving a forgery syndicate.

“The one being shared the most is about NRD giving out MyKad to Chinese but what happened was, a syndicate forged fake IDs and gave it to the Chinese nationals.

“The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Agency (MACC) has moved in and acted against the syndicate. The NRD is not involved in this case. Therefore, I would like to clarify that NRD has never issued MyKad simply.”

On another incident, Ruslin said the NRD was accused of giving a MyKad to a Chinese woman without following procedures.

“The NRD issued the MyKad after a thorough check on the woman. First, she is married to a Malaysian. Second, the woman has been staying for more than 20 years add third, she also has a permanent resident status.

“She is eligible to own a MyKad and we issued after she passed all the requirements. We did not issue the MyKad easily.

“We hope the police can track down those responsible behind the spreading of these untrue claims.”

Asked if there are political motives behind the slander, Ruslin refused to speculate.

“I do not want to go there but we need to clear our name. We are an agency under the Home Ministry, therefore, it’s important that we clear the air on this.”

On Saturday, the NRD on its official Facebook page said action would be taken against individuals who spread slander, claiming that the government was granting citizenship to Chinese immigrants. – September 9, 2019.
