THE younger brother of Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) president Shafie Apdal has been arrested after being called in by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for questioning today.
MACC Deputy Commissioner (operations) Azam Baki confirmed that Hamid Apdal was detained around 9.30pm at the MACC Sabah office without elaborating further.
He was arrested to assist in the investigation into the alleged embezzlement of RM1.5 billion in federal funds meant for rural projects in Sabah.
It was understood that he arrived at the Sabah MACC office in Kota Kinabalu this morning.
The 52-year-old is an Umno Semporna division member and works as a volunteer at a mosque in Sabah. MACC also raided his house in Putatan and left his home around 6pm.
So far, the MACC has arrested Warisan vice-president Peter Anthony, Warisan Youth chief Mohd Azis Jamman, an Assistant Deputy Secretary of the Rural and Regional Development Ministry, a 54-year-old businessman, Tenom Umno Youth chief Jamawi Jaafar and Tawau Umno Youth chief Ariffin Kassim to facilitate in the investigation.
MACC deputy chief commissioner Azam Baki said some 60 companies are expected to be investigated on the alleged mishandling of federal funded projects and that some 32 people are expected to be called in for questioning.
Azam had said the RM1.5 billion had been misappropriated from an allocation of RM7.5 billion meant for rural projects over the span of six years between 209 to 2015. – October 10, 2017.
