SELANGOR Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari has been asked by his party PKR to brief the Pakatan Harapan presidential council on Friday on the proposed unilateral conversion enactment to go before the state assembly.

PH member DAP in particular is opposed to the proposed legislation.

This evening, a statement from PKR said that Amirudin had briefed the PKR political bureau meeting, chaired by president Anwar Inrahim, today, at party headquarters.

“The political bureau then told him to give a full briefing and hold deep discussion during the PH presidential council meeting on Friday,” said PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil in the statement.

The PH meeting is attended by leaders of all parties in the pact, and includes PH chairman and Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The proposed amendment to the Selangor enactment wants to remove the consent of both parents for the conversion of minors, and change it to “mother or father”.

Despite protests from DAP and other civil liberty supporters on the grounds that such a move would be unconstitutional, Amirudin recently said he intends to continue with the proposed amendment bill in the next state sitting in November “if there is a need to do so”.

Amirudin said the state government would consult with all parties and leaders before referring the bill to Sultan of Selangor Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

During the PKR political bureau meeting, the Selangor MB also briefed his party leaders on the developments of various people-centric programmes in Selangor, including the free water supply and monetary schemes for pensioners, which the state government proposes to scale back.

“The political bureau agreed that these programmes needed to be continuously upgraded to ensure the Bottom 40 group are always taken care of,” said Fahmi. – August 28, 2019.

  • Before briefing PH Presidential Council, we want to know what is PKR & Datuk AI's stand on this. The highest court in this country has already made the judgement that you need the consent of both parents. So what is there to brief? Wasting everybody's bloody time on non-essential things. There are so many other pressing issues to be solved by PKR/PH.

  • Don't think Selangoreans wants a bill o be submitted to the state legislative which goes against a federal court order. Only nuts of the present state govt. will want to stir a 'war' in this issue. Use your brain a little lah. Surprise me we have a MB who has so little of wisdom and political intelligence to put up a proposal that goes against the will of majority.
