A MALAYSIAN doctor, who was caught cheating on overtime claims and other allowances at a hospital in Perth, Australia, was the recipient of the Maal Hijrah award for medicine in Penang recently.
The Penang Malay Association (Pemenang), which gave out the award, said it was unaware of the cheating by the doctor, who was reported by an Australian newspaper to have falsified patient records and made false recall claims.
The doctor is said to be working at Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital in Kubang Kerian, Kelantan.
Pemenang president Mohd Yusoff Latif said the association would not take back the award as no action had been taken against the doctor by the government.
“If we had known about the matter before the award was given out, we would have taken it into consideration.
“As the government has not taken any action, there is no reason for us to take back the award.
“Furthermore, the doctor is still employed under the government,” he told The Malaysian Insight.
Australian newspaper The Sunday Times reported that the Western Australia State Administrative Tribunal had ordered that the doctor be disqualified from applying to be registered as a medical practitioner in the country for two and a half years.
It said he had falsified patient records four times, claimed overtime when he did not work on 12 occasions and made 61 false recall claims, leading to him receiving A$7,093 (RM23,000).
The doctor was reported to have been on an international fellowship between June 2015 and and June last year when the misconduct occurred, and was financially supported by a Malaysian scholarship while he was in Perth.
He reportedly paid back the money to the South Metropolitan Health Service and expressed remorse over his actions.
He was also ordered to pay A$11,500 for the costs of the proceedings.
The Malaysian Insight is attempting to contact the doctor. – October 5, 2017.
