BARISAN Nasional (BN) can snare up to 32 parliamentary seats from Pakatan Harapan (PH) by working with its former nemesis PAS, said Najib Razak as he pitched the alliance charter to party members today.
The BN adviser said Umno and PAS will not repeat the mistakes it had made at the last general election and will win Putrajaya at the 15th general election.
He said three-cornered fights in GE14 had allowed PAS to win many of the Malay-majority seats in the peninsula.
“We will work with them. We will ensure there are no three-cornered fights. This will save us. I can see the light at the tunnel,” he told Permatang Pauh Umno delegates today as he opened the party meeting today.
However, Najib did not specify which seats he expected the alliance to snatch back from PH.
Umno and PAS will sign a charter on September 14 that will lead to the establishment of a new Malay-Muslim nationalist opposition pact ahead of GE15, the two parties announced in a joint statement on Thursday.
The charter will be signed by the parties’ respective presidents – Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for Umno and Hadi for PAS – at Dewan Merdeka, Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur, where Umno holds its annual general assemblies.
The last general election saw BN lose federal power after it picked up 79 parliamentary seats from 222 contested.
Umno won 54 seats but was reduced to 37 after 17 MPs dumped the party and eventually joined splinter Bersatu.
Barisan Nasional won 32 seats out of the 77 parliamentary seats which saw three-cornered fights. PAS took 23 seats while PH won 22.
Najib today beat a positive note for the future, saying there are three elements working in BN’s favour.
“We have an Umno on the rise, we have an agreement with PAS and we also have the ‘bossku’ phenomenon. These three elements will determine the outcome of the next polls,” he said. – July 27, 2019.
