FORMER prime minister Najib Razak has questioned Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s inconsistency in dealing with the sex video allegation that minister Mohamed Azmin Ali is currently embroiled in, comparing it to the handling of sodomy allegations against Anwar Ibrahim in 1998.
In a brief tweet this afternoon, Najib said: “In 1998. This was a moral issue, not political issue. In 2019. This is a political issue, not moral issue.”
He, however, did not mention names, but it is believed that he was referring to Dr Mahathir’s remarks on the sex video scandal implicating the economics affairs minister.
Dr Mahathir had said he refused to fall into the trap of those using a sex video to tarnish a member of his cabinet.
He had said he was not defending Azmin for the sake of it but was, in fact, rejecting dirty politics and those who were trying to “use” him.
“I am not defending him. I am saying the dirty kind of politics like that will not trap me to be a part of it,” said Dr Mahathir.
Dr Mahathir had said if he removed Azmin over the sex clips, the mastermind behind the videos would be the winner.
The issue was not a moral one but political, which should be solved politically, he wrote in his latest post in chedet.cc.
Anwar, who was sacked as deputy prime minister and finance minister, has maintained the two sodomy charges against him, in 1998, and in 2010 during Najib’s administration, were fabricated.
Dr Mahathir had said if he could turn back time, he would not have sacked his deputy, Anwar.
He had said he made the wrong decision in firing Anwar, but he “had no choice”.
“From a political point of view, I would not have done this (sacking Anwar).
“When I was prime minister, I promised myself not to do anything that would make people hate me,” he said. – July 24, 2019.
