THE eight people arrested over alleged bribery in exchange for the release of illegal immigrants have been remanded for another five days.
The suspects are a deputy public prosecutor, a lawyer and police officers, who were arrested on Wednesday and originally remanded for five days.
Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission deputy chief commissioner (operations) Azam Baki confirmed to reporters in Kuala Lumpur today that the agency was given an order for the extended remand to facilitate investigations.
Only one of the policemen has been released, he said.
Investigations are being conducted under Section 16(A)(B) of the MACC Act for bribery.
The cops still in remand are of various ranks, including corporal and sergeant. Five of them are investigating officers, while one is a court policeman.
The Malaysian Insight first reported on the case three days ago. The case came to light when MACC found RM17,500 on the lawyer, who is said to have facilitated the release of nine illegals.
Another RM85,000, believed to be from illegal activities, was seized from the DPP. β July 22, 2019.
