HISHAMMUDDIN Hussein said his family ties with former prime minister Najib Razak has never been a factor in his decision making in Umno. 

The Umno Sembrong division head, who is first cousins with Najib, stressed that matters relating to religion, race and country should not be affected by family ties to those in a position of power. 

“The decision to support Najib or not had nothing to do with the fact that we are related, and this has always been the case in the past.

“In decisions that affect the party as well as the future of the race, religion and country, it makes no sense to make decisions based on personal relationships. This is not my style,” he said after officiating an Umno Women division meeting in Kota Melaka today. 

He was responding to a query on whether he supported Najib’s appointment as BN adviser because they were related. 

The decision to appoint Najib has split the party in different opinions. Some in the party believe that his appointment was a step backwards. 

“People want to see us divided. My advise is to not fall for it,” Hishammuddin said. – July 20, 2019.
