A MAN known as Mie Tomoi believed to be involved in the torching of Perlis mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin’s car is arrested today.

The 49-year-old, who is unemployed, tested positive for methamphetamine use and had a criminal record of 11 prior offences as well as being wanted for two other cases, Perlis police chief Noor Mushar Mohd told The Malaysian Insight.

The man has been wanted by the police since the arrest of five others on May 19 over the burning of Mohd Asri’s official car at his house on Jalan Persiaran Wawasan, Perlis in March.

Noor Mushar said the arrest was made at a house in Kg Sekolah, Merbau Pulas in Kuala Ketil, Kedah, at around 4am today.

Police also seized three mobile phones, a SIM card and three memory cards.

“After questioning, the suspect confessed to setting fire to the Perlis mufti’s car together with another person who was arrested on May 19,” Noor Mushar told The Malaysian Insight.

Investigations are still ongoing and police have obtained a four-day remand order until Tuesday on the man.

The primary suspect in the arson case was arrested on May 19 with four others who were subsequently released.

The primary suspect, aged 36, had confessed to setting fire to the mufti’s car after he was paid RM500.

The motive for the arson is now clear, but there was speculation that it was related to the sacking of imams in Perlis in January. – July 6, 2019.
