THE Rohingya crisis in Myanmar is potentially an opportunty for the recruitment of terrorists, said Burma Human Rights Network (BHRN).
“This human rights issue has become a breeding ground for terrorism in the region,” said BHRN executive director Kyaw Win.
“There are people signing up for jihad,” said Khaw Win during his presentation of the report “Persecution of Muslims in Burma” at the International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies (IAIS) Malaysia in Petaling Jaya today.
Kyaw Win said the situation had given room for terrorists to act while raising the Myanmar military’s level of aggression.
But he cautioned that the situation should not be seen as a religious issue.
“This is a human rights issue and we are responsible for helping them.”
Malaysia Islamic Organisations Consultative Council secretary-general Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid said NGOs in Malaysia would work with their counterparts in Myanmar to pressure the government to stop persecuting the Rohingya.
Azmi said the attacks in Myanmar were aimed at Muslims.
He said the Myanmar government should take heed of Malaysia and stop the atrocities against the Rohingya.
“As we have welcomed Myanmar workers here, they should at least listen to us. But their local consulate doesn’t seem to be bothered when we send them a memorandum,” said Azmi. – September 26, 2017.
