Pro-Latheefa petition surfaces

ANOTHER online petition has been created on Change.org for Latheefa Koya but this time, it is to support her appointment as the new Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief.

The petition, Support Latheefa Koya as Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief from June 2019, was started by Alvin Chong.

The petition in support of the first woman to head the graft-busting agency aims to garner 5,000 signatures.

At 10am, it has more than 2,700 signatures.

Ahmad Ghuzal Mohd Tahiti said in a comment she is the right person to lead the MACC.

“She is the right person with the right credentials and her past performance indicates excellent future performance towards achieving a corruption-free country.

“Definitely give her my support and in hope she carries on her no-nonsense ways! Will pray for her safety as she deals with the corrupted to the cord (core) of people,” said YH Thum.

Muhammad Abdullah said there isn’t a better person than Latheefa for the job.

“There can never be a better person to help MACC then Latheefa. Please, I am not the ‘ambu’ or ‘bodek’ geng of Latheefa. There are many times I am pissed or with her for her stand against PKR or PH. Later I realise she is a kind that stand firm on principles and do not barge for personal gain. She went against Mahathir, Anwar, PKR and PH. Let me stress here of all decision made by Mahathir after the election the elevation of Latheefa is the BEST.”

The human rights lawyer and former PKR member’s appointment drew mixed reaction from civil society, the opposition and Pakatan Harapan, whose members are split in their opinions.

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s decision to appoint her at his sole discretion and without prior consultation with cabinet members also courted its fair share of criticism.

The appointment, said critics, should have gone through the yet-to-be-enforced parliamentary select committee on major public appointments.

The manner is also seen as running counter to PH’s promise of transparency.

Her status as a former PKR member, too, garnered concerns and criticism. Latheefa quit the party upon being told of her impending appointment.

Meanwhile, another petition was created on Change.org recently, seeking the ouster of Latheefa from her post, days after her appointment was announced by the prime minister’s office.

The petition, created by user Malaysia Baharu, has been endorsed by PKR’s Wangsa Maju MP Dr Tan Yee Kew.

Latheefa replaces Mohd Shukri Abdull, who requested that his contract be shortened from its full tenure, which was supposed to end on May 17 next year.

She is the first woman chief of MACC and the first without an enforcement background to lead the anti-graft agency.

Latheefa, 46, has been with Messrs Daim & Gamany since 2002.

She read law at the University of London, graduating in 1997. She has practised law for 17 years, specialising in criminal defence litigation, public administrative law, general litigation and employment law. – June 8, 2019.

  • Enough of all petition. In malaysia it comes to nothing except to satisfy one ego and emotion. What has happened to the petition on Maszlee. It was gaining volume and traction but no result as mahtir is too busy and being bothered by silly politics in PH. Maszlee is still happily holding his portfolio in the Education and spewing out more nonscences. It is understood that many support LK to the post and do not need anymore peition to make her appoinment looks ridicuous or childish in nature. to be crude f@#$ all those who are against and trying to apply democratic principle when they themselves are hypocrite and self serving. LK do your job and cuci bersih all those be it in PH or UmnoPASBN. Set up a new mandatory regulations and table a new law that all politicians form both political divide declare their wealth and assets to MACC and will be reviewed yearly as a check to

    • cont deter corruptions. Make it public and screw those with excuses about intrusion into their privacy and security . Those are weak excuses. If they comes in with average wealth or even being poor into politics , no way can they be multi millionaire or billionaire when they are oust from their ministership or state adun. Give a certain acceptable range as tolerance for themselves to improve their wealth but not ridiculous as what we are seeing in the brazen plundering by UmnoBN. Lets make it a law all the way thru from public office to private institution. If Mahatir is sincere to rid corruption he should be supporting this law as mandatory. lets see who will oppose and we rakyat will know who to choose in GE15.
