OUTGOING Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Mohd Shukri Abdull today said he is cutting short his tenure as his mission to fight graft has been accomplished.
“My mission has been accomplished. I have placed MACC on the right track.
“All officers are united. They are battling corruption together and the support from the public has been strong,” he told The Malaysian Insight in a statement.
The Prime Minister’s Office today announced that Shukri has cut short his contract as the MACC chief that is supposed to expire in May next year.
It is also announced that human rights lawyer Latheefa Koya will succeed him as chief commissioner on a two-year term.
Latheefa, 46, is the first woman chief of MACC, and the first person without an enforcement background to lead the anti-graft agency.
Shukri was appointed as MACC chief on May 18 last year.
He had served with the commission for 32 years before opting for early retirement on July 31, 2016 as deputy chief commissioner (operations).
He was then brought back by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to lead the commission.
No reason was given for Shukri’s decision to end his tenure prematurely.
MACC in a statement today said the government wishes to extend its gratitude to Shukri, who has contributed to the nation in his capacity as its chief. – June 4, 2019.
