TENAGA Nasional Bhd’s (TNB) focus is to rectify its billing issue first before worrying about whether it will be fined by the Energy Commission.

TNB’s CEO Amir Hamzah Azizan said that they will rectify billing problems caused by a system glitch before addressing other issues.

“My focus is to resolve this issue, we will talk about other issues later. The customers affected are our priority,” he said at a press conference today following public complaints about excessive electricity bills.

Amir was responding to a question from journalists on the possibility that TNB might be fined by the Energy Commission.

“Our focus is not to worry about the fine, let’s get through the issue first. Most of our effort is going to resolve this issue. After we close it we will deal with anything else,” he said, adding that they would focus on reimbursing all consumers affected.

Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Minister Yeo Bee Yin had said that TNB could be fined for overbilling.

“The Energy Commission has already given them (TNB) a warning letter, and an instruction notice, they must resolve the problem within 30 days and all who complained must have fair treatment,” Yeo had said.

The minister also pinpointed “negligence” as the core of the issue and called for TNB to be held accountable.

The Energy Commission is to look at which provisions of the Electricity Supply Act can be applied to fine TNB, and is to submit a full report on the matter within the next two weeks, Yeo added. – May 31, 2019.
