MORE Penang Road Transport Department (RTD) officers are set to face corruption charges for allegedly receiving protection money from lorry companies and drivers, said Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission sources.

This included the officer whose wife spilled the beans on the corruption racket that led to the arrest of 79 people and nine being charged with 164 counts of corruption.

Sources told The Malaysian Insight that the nine who were charged on Tuesday was not the end of the story.

They said among those to be charged soon is the RTD officer whose wife blew the lid off corruption in the department.

It was the wife who had gone to MACC last month about the racket after finding out that her husband had taken a new wife and stopped giving her money.

As a result, MACC began investigations and rounded up 79 people, including RTD officers.

The nine were charged for accepting payments of between RM10,000 and RM32,000 monthly since 2016 as a perk to not take action against errant lorry drivers.

They also allegedly leaked information on RTD operations to the drivers.

The MACC investigation revealed the structure for the payment flow and how RTD officials communicated with the lorry drivers and their companies.

“Without the tip-off from the wife, this racket would have continued,” said the source.

The wife, who is the owner of a beauty salon, was said to be in charge of the account containing the illegal funds.

Investigations showed that the money had been used for paying off top officials in the department as well as to play golf. – May 31, 2019.
