THE Housing and Local Government Ministry and the Fire and Rescue Department have no need of lawyer Syazlin Mansor’s services in the inquest into the death of fireman Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim because they have the attorney-general acting for them, Zuraida Kamarudin said today.
Syazlin was redundant, the housing and local government minister said.
This came as a surprise as Syazlin has been involved in the inquest since it began. She was also reportedly representing the family of the deceased.
“We have come to realise that the AG is representing the government – that would include both the ministry and Bomba (Fire Department).
“Therefore, Syazlin’s role in representing Bomba has become redundant. So she has to withdraw,” the minister had said.
The Malaysian Insight has contacted Attorney-General Tommy Thomas for comment and is awaiting his response.
Zuraida was commenting on reports that Syazlin had withdrawn from the case after receiving a letter last week. Zuraida did not confirm that there was such a letter.
Syazlin announced her withdrawal this morning at the Coroner’s Court in Shah Alam. The lawyer later told Malaysiakini that she did so due to new developments, but declined to reveal details.
Syazlin also refused to comment on a Sinar Harian report linking her decision to pull out to a letter from a senior government official who oversees legal matters.
“I do not wish to respond. Please refer to YB (Zuraida),” the lawyer had said.
Quoting a source, the report said the letter ordered Syazlin and the ministry to withdraw from the matter.
Sinar Harian claimed there were those who felt threatened by Syazlin, whom it said was unyielding and aggressive in her attempt to uncover the truth in the case of Adib’s death.
Syazlin told the court that her withdrawal would also nullify expert witness Prof Dr Shahrom Abdul Wahid’s testimony.
Shahrom had told the court that Adib sustained his injuries when he was pulled out of an emergency medical rescue services vehicle and assaulted on November 27 during the Seafield temple riots.
His testimony contradicted that of two other experts, who told the court that Adib fell from the vehicle and that his injuries were due to his being hit by the vehicle which had backed into him as the driver attempted to escape an advancing mob.
Adib, 24, died at the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur on December 17. – May 27, 2019.

Why was this "realised" only at the eleventh hour? This is something very inexplicable, isn't it? Is it an attempt to
