PKR will meet with the Election Commission (EC) and polls watchdog Bersih 2.0 to discuss the process of electoral reform, said party president Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar said separate meetings with the two bodies would take place to address the lack of clarity on the regulations, especially for campaigns involving ministers.

He said it is crucial to make clear the dos and don’ts to avert confusion.

“What is important is that there is no abuse of power, especially involving government machinery,” he said at a press conference after the party’s leadership council meeting.

The Port Dickson MP admitted that the process of electoral reform has not been up to mark.

On May 15, Anwar said that there was a need for clear and fair procedures to allow ministers to campaign in elections during office hours.

He said this after Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad urged the EC to reconsider the restriction on ministers campaigning during working hours.

Meanwhile, the PKR central committee and political bureau will start preparing the machinery for future polls.

Anwar said the Sarawak state elections, to be held in 2021, are the first in line.

Works Minister and Selangau MP Baru Bian will lead the state election machinery. He will be assisted by his central colleagues secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution and vice-presidents Chua Tian Chang and Dr Xavier Jeyakumar, he said.

“They have been tasked with developing strategies and liaising with (Pakatan Harapan) component parties to form an effective election machinery.” – May 26, 2019.
