IN conjunction with National Youth Day, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad reminded young people to stay away from corrupt practices and uphold integrity at all times.
“I would like to emphasise to youth who hold positions in the public and private sectors as well as in non-governmental organisations to always uphold integrity and say no to bribery,” he said in a keynote address at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.
He said the youth must be well aware of the dangers of bribery and corruption, which had caused the downfall of the former government.
Dr Mahathir also acknowledged the role of the youth in helping Pakatan Harapan to unseat Barisan Nasional in the general election.
He said the youth have shown itself to be strong in upholding ideals and morally correct principles, refusing to share the previous government’s corrupt viewpoint that cash is king.
“It is no secret that the youth has been instrumental for this to happen (PH’s victory).
“The government was successful in unseating the previous government because the youth did not give in to pressure and was not afraid of threats.
Dr Mahathir reminded the youth, however, that their responsibilities do not end at the polls, as the there is the bigger challenge of cleaning up after the previous government’.
“We have to come together to repair this damage and come up with ways to improve the country that will be inherited by the youth.”
He said the young must work together with the older generation to develop the country. – May 15, 2019.
