DISCUSSIONS with Dr Mahathir Mohamad on the handover date of the prime ministership are proceeding smoothly, said Anwar Ibrahim today.

The PKR president also said that Dr Mahathir would continue to play an important role as a statesman, even after the change in leadership.

“Even if I take over the leadership, Dr Mahathir will still play a role as a statesman who has contributed a lot to the country.

“Therefore, I do not see any issue in the matter,” he said at the National Youth Council 2019 programme at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in Bangi today.

Dr Mahathir had recently said that it was “definite” that Anwar would be his successor, as promised.

The Port Dickson MP said he has no qualms waiting as Dr Mahathir has to carry out his current duties.

“As for dates and others, let it be discussed between us… as it is, it is currently being discussed.

“I have no problem (waiting) as Dr Mahathir has a role to play and should be given the space to fulfil his responsibilities.”

On his feelings a year of after being freed from prison, Anwar said he was grateful that so much time has passed his release.

“Oh, it has been a year! I am grateful for the release and a year has passed by.”

He added he was spending his time meeting the people, old friends, grasssroots leaders, civil society bodies and activists.

Anwar was released on May 16 last year after receiving a royal pardon. He was serving a five-year jail term for his second sodomy conviction.
