OPPOSITION MPs should be open to declaring their assets to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) as they were critical on the matter in the past, said Anwar Ibrahim.

The PKR president said MPs should accept the proposal as the government is executing its responsibility by enforcing transparency.

“Since the opposition has always been critical on the matter, now, they should  be supportive of the proposal,” he said on the sidelines of an Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia event today.

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had said yesterday that all MPs will be required to make the declaration to the anti-graft body as part of efforts to fight graft.

Dr Mahathir said its implementation would be left to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Mohamed Ariff Md Yusof.

“We have to go through the speaker before this is initiated,” he had said.

Meanwhile, the government has included five suggestions from the National Anti-Corruption Plan into the ministers’ key performance indicators.

“All the ministers will have to ensure that the members of administration declare their assets to MACC.

The Port Dickson MP said the matter will be discussed in Parliament to allow the ruling coalition and opposition to air their suggestions.

Currently, only ministers and their deputies are required to make asset declarations to the graft-busters. MPs from both sides of the divide are not required to do so but backbenchers, including Anwar, have declared their assets.

“I have declared my assets but it has not been used yet because MPs are not required to do so yet,” Anwar said.

“We should enforce this for the opposition as well as money trails are on record.” – May 15, 2019.
