ALL high-profile cases will be treated as normal proceedings from the court’s perspective, said newly appointed Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat.
The top judge said it was public expectation that made a case different from the rest, even though all cases would be treated as the same by the courts.
“This is in terms of procedure and in any of the proceedings. It is just the public perception. From the courts point of view it’s the same,” she told reporters at the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya today.
Tengku Maimun was responding to recent high profile cases such as the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) case and the Wang Kelian Royal Commission of Inquiry.
Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Sha, today presented the instrument of office to Tengku Maimun at Istana Negara today.
The former Federal Court judge is the first woman to be made the chief justice.
Her appointment is effective May 2. She takes over from Richard Malanjum, who retired on April 12.
Tengku Maimun also said that she will try an instill discipline among the newly appointed judges.
“For new appointments we have this induction courses.
“The main issue is to expose them to the various job scope and instill in them the need to be efficient and hardworking.
“And we will emphasise to them what are the qualities of a good judge. Over time the judges can acquire these skills.” – May 6, 2019.
