FOUR Pakatan Harapan lawmakers, including Education Minister Maszlee Malik, were absent during voting for the bill to amend Article 1(2) of the constitution, de facto law minister Liew Vui Keong revealed today.
Liew said apart from Maszlee, who is the Simpang Renggam MP, the other PH lawmakers who missed the vote were Deputy Primary Industries Minister Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin (Hang Tuah Jaya), Noor Amin Ahmad (Kangar) and Muslimin Yahaya (Sungai Besar).
“Up to two requested to attend meetings overseas,” Liew told reporters in Putrajaya.
“As for the other two, I leave it up to the party whip,” he said, adding that lawmakers may not be absent from parliament on the day of a crucial vote under the directive of the chief whip on instruction from the prime minister.
PH failed to pass the bill on its second reading with only 138 votes, 10 votes shy of the two-thirds required for a constitutional amendment.
Fifty-nine MPs from Pas, Umno and Gabungan Parti Sarawak had abstained from voting, and 20 more, including former prime minister Najib Razak, were absent during the vote.
Pakatan and its ally Warisan were supported by three Sabah opposition MPs Maximus Johnity Ongkili (PBS-Kota Marudu), Jeffrey Gapari Kitingan (Star-Keningau) and Arthur Joseph Kurup (PBRS-Pensiangan), and one independent Anifah Aman (Ind-Kimanis)
The GPS MPs who abstained were Fadillah Yusof (Petrajaya), Wan Junaidi Tunku Jaafar (Santubong), Richard Riot (Serian), Tiong King Sing (Bintulu), Hajah Hanifah Hajar Taib (Mukah), Rubiah Wang (Kota Samarahan), Nancy Shukri (Batang Sadong), Rohani Karim (Batang Lupar), Alexander Nanta Linggi (Kapit), Henry Sum Abong (Lawas), Ago Dagang (Kanowit), Anyi Ngau (Baram), Hasbi Habibollah (Limbang), Masir Kujat (Sri Aman), Wilson Ugak Anak Kumbong (Hulu Rajang), Robert Lawson Chuat (Betong), Ahmad Johnie Zawawi (Igan), Yusuf Abd Wahab (Tanjong Manis) and Lukanisman Awang Sauni (Sibuti). β April 12, 2019.
