A GOVERNMENT backbencher today tabled a motion to get a parliamentary select committee to look into the recent Malaysian Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) report on the disappearances of Pastor Raymond Koh and Perlis Hope founder Amri Che Mat.

Suhakam, which conducted an inquiry into the two disappearances, concluded that the Bukit Aman Special Branch unit was involved.

Oscar Ling (Sibu-PH) said the allegation that the Special Branch was involved in the disappearance of the two activists was serious.

“The matter should be investigated by the Special Select Committee on Defence and Home Affairs,” he said in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Khoo Poay Tiong (Kota Melaka-PH) supported the motion, stressing on the gravity of the issue.

“Two men disappeared by force, and Suhakam’s report said SB (Special Branch) was involved. This is shocking for the people.”

Deputy Speaker Mohd Rashid Hasnon told Ling to put the matter in writing.

Last week, Suhakam revealed that the two activists were snatched by Special Branch teams from federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman, and were never found again.

The revelation has damaged the reputation of the police, and led to calls for Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun to resign or be suspended from duty pending investigations.

Fuzi, who is due for mandatory retirement next month, was Bukit Aman Special Branch director when Amri disappeared in November 2016, and Koh in February 2017.

When asked to comment on the Suhakam report, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said if there was clear evidence, a task force would be set up to look into the matter.

Among others, Suhakam had recommended for an independent task force to be set up to reinvestigate the disappearances.

Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said last week that a royal commission of inquiry could also be considered. – April 9, 2019
