THERE is no need for Pakatan Harapan (PH) to call for a leadership council meeting to resolve the Public Accounts Committee fiasco, coalition deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin said.
The PAC has lost several members after its chairman Ronald Kiandee joined Bersatu, a PH component. The chairmanship was promised to the opposition, as pledged in PH’s GE14 manifesto. Kiandee was formerly with Umno.
The first to quit the PAC in protest was PKR’s Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar last week.
Opposition chief Ismail Sabri Yaakob yesterday said that Barisan Nasional and PAS lawmakers are also quitting the PAC until Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad revised his decision to keep Kiandee and appoint a new chairman.
“The (PH) chairman (Dr Mahathir) has been accommodating. He is used to hearing suggestions, and he has responded.
“I think he has responded quite positively to what was suggested by other PH leaders. I think we should be happy with that,” the home minister told reporters at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition this afternoon.
Muhyiddin said the matter will be resolved soon.
He also said it is normal for any political party to have internal rumbling.
“It means we are democratic, and that we are open. People can have their views. That is a good sign.
“We have leaders who are willing to listen, like Tun (Dr Mahathir) in this case,” he said.
After Kiandee joined Bersatu, Dr Mahathir said there was no need for him to resign as PAC chairman, leading to unhappiness in PH and BN as the decision was deemed to be breaking PH’s election pledge.
However, the prime minister changed his mind following criticism, saying that Kiandee will be replaced soon. – March 26, 2019.
