DE facto law minister Liew Vui Keong said he will talk to Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin about whether police can use the Sedition Act.

Both ministers had made conflicting statements about the use of the act.

Yesterday, Liew said in the Dewan Rakyat that police had been told to avoid using the act while the government looked into repealing it.

But this morning, Muhyiddin reportedly said that police could still use the Sedition Act for arrests and investigations, although with discretion.

“I will talk to Muhyiddin about this to ensure the direction, considering that the government has the intention to repeal the act,” Liew said during his working visit in Penang.

“I will talk to him for a final decision. We have a cabinet meeting on Friday.”

The question of whether the Sedition Act – which civil groups, lawyers and many in Pakatan Harapan had labelled as “draconian” – would be repealed or not is still a work in progress, Liew added. – March 20, 2019.
