THE technical committee that Barisan Nasional will form to study concerns raised by MCA and MIC should focus on multiculturalism, said Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin.

“I would suggest that the committee looks into certain core principles of cooperation.

“If Umno has decided to work with PAS and at the same time with MCA and MIC in Barisan National, it must be based on certain core principles which are committed towards Malaysia as a multiracial country,” Khairy said at a forum on governance at Sunway Hotel today.

He said it is critical for the parties to come together and identify what their common core principles are.

The former youth and sports minister said cooperation between Umno and PAS should not be restricted to Malay and Muslim issues.

“If, say, we work together because we just want the votes of the Malay community and the Muslim community based on issues of race and religion… that is not going to be.”

“My position on Umno and PAS is that we have to sit down and discuss what the common principles are.

“You cannot just get together and decide to play race and religion and win the election. It should be based on more than that for the context of Barisan National as well.”

The BN technical committee was announced on March 8 by the coalition’s acting chairman and acting Umno president Mohamad Hasan, after no consensus was reached between Umno, MCA and MIC that BN should be dissolved.

MCA had first pushed for BN’s dissolution at its party annual general assembly last December.

Among its grouses were the fact that Umno was now cooperating more closely with its former arch-rival, PAS, to win the Malay-Muslim vote, as well as allegedly racist statements by some Umno leaders.

On the coming Rantau by-election, Khairy said he would campaign for Mohamad.

The Rantau state seat is under Khairy’s Rembau parliamentary constituency.

  • Haven't KJ heard Nazri say the BN spirit is dead? UMNO is at the crossroad of looking out for survival and lost absolutely its directions. UMNO is FINISHED!
