PKR has a list of potential candidates for the Rantau by-election, said president Anwar Ibrahim.

He said a meeting of the party’s top leadership on Wednesday will whittle down the names before deciding on the final pick.

“We have several names, and we are ready,” he said at an event in Kuala Lumpur today.

“We will have a meeting on Wednesday to finalise the list.”

In the 14th general election, Umno acting president Mohamad Hasan won Rantau uncontested after PKR’s Dr S. Streram was barred from entering the nomination centre for not having a pass issued by the Election Commission.

On May 23 last year, Dr Streram filed an election petition seeking a declaration that Mohamad’s win is invalid, and a by-election should be called.

On November 16, the election court ruled Mohamad’s victory null and void, and his appeal against the decision was dismissed by the Federal Court.

The EC is expected to announce the nomination and polling dates for the by-election tomorrow. – March 4, 2019.
