NINE PAS leaders are at the centre of an investigation into claims that the Islamist party received RM90 million of 1Malaysia Development Bhd’s (1MDB) money via Umno.
Sources said the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission was checking on the nine PAS members’ personal bank records.
“It is possible that the funds were channelled through the personal account of the leaders and former leaders, which is the focus of the investigation now.
“All nine party leaders will be summoned soon assist in investigations,” a source told The Malaysian Insight.
MACC sources said investigators were trying to establish how the money was paid, who were the intermediaries, and how the money was spent.
Sources said investigators screened the assets of the PAS leaders and found that they owned a variety of luxury vehicles including a BMW 525, Mini Clubman, Toyota Vellfire, Toyota Camry and Toyota Fortuners.
Other vehicles of note unearthed by the search were a Range Rover, Audi A6, Toyota Altis, Porsche Cayman, Audi Q7, Volkswagen Passat and several superbikes.
“Some are registered in their name and some are registered in the names of the second and third wives.
“Some were found to own luxury cars worth more than a million besides a bungalow worth more than RM3 million in the Klang Valley,” said a source.
Sources said MACC will also look at the PAS leaders’ personal financial statements.
“The main focus of this investigation is on allegations of corrupt practices and where the money went, especially sudden asset and cash purchases,” he said.
MACC has so far recorded the statements of PAS central committee member Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz and the party deputy president Nasharudin Mat Isa.
The investigation was launched after PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang withdrew a suit filed against Sarawak Report editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown over an article containing the allegations.
The two parties reached settlement out of court last week, the terms of which were undisclosed.
Rewcastle-Brown, however, said it was agreed that the “offending article” would not be removed. In the article, she alleges that RM90 million was deposited into the accounts of the top PAS leadership so that they would support Umno and Barisan Nasional.
Earlier this week, Sarawak Report ran an article claiming Hadi’s lawyer had admitted that Nik Abduh had received money from Umno. – February 9, 2019.
