MOHAMAD Yazid Kong Abdullah, 52, was sentenced to seven months’ jail and fined RM10,000 by the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court today after pleading guilty to insulting Prophet Muhammad and Islam on social media.

Judge Hasbullah Adam said the nature of the crime was sending an unfounded message on Facebook that touches on religion, especially Islam.

“The constitution says that Islam is the national religion and the constitution is the supreme law of the land.

“Your actions have challenged the constitution. I have also taken into account all the mitigating factors from both sides before making a decision.

“Your incarceration will start from the day of your remand which is on March 5,” he said at the Jalan Duta court complex.

The unemployed man was charged with using the Facebook account of “Yazid Kong” to post insulting communication with intention to hurt others at 8.21pm on February 24, 2019.

On Friday, a man from Kuching was jailed 10 years and fined RM50,000 for insulting Islam on Facebook.

Earlier, Yazid’s lawyer, Muhammad Syafiq Salleh, said he should be given a lighter sentence as he had just converted to Islam.

“Since he embraced Islam, he did not get any proper support or guidance.

“He didn’t know how to interpret Islam and its practices.”

Syafiq added that Yazid has four children from his first marriage and a two-year-old boy from his second marriage.

“He divorced his first wife and then got married to an Indonesian women. Her work permit will expire soon and she will have to return back home.

“The son is Malaysian so he won’t have anyone if he is jailed.”

DPP Muhammad Asyraf Md Kamal argued that Yazid should not be given a reduced sentence as the matter was a serious offence.

“This is a serious matter as it is an insult against Islam. This action has incited anger among Muslims.

“He sent three separate messages and should have known that his insults will go viral.”

Asyraf said it looks like the insults were planned.

“The court must send a clear message and not compromise on this. He has tendency to repeat his actions.”

Syafiq said his client is remorseful and apologises to all Malaysians.

“If he is sentenced, he asked to be placed in a section where he will be able to learn more about Islam in prison.” – March 11, 2019.
