SABAH police made a record 4,708 arrests for drug-related offences in 2018 compared with 4,510 a year earlier, said Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun.

The figure represents a 4.3% year-to-year increase, he said in Kota Kinabalu today.

Last year, police also arrested and screened 9,128 suspects for drug-related offences compared with 6,291 in 2017.

Syabu was the most confiscated drug at 211kg last year compared with 71kg a year earlier followed by ketum at 6kg (4.8kg), Fuzi said.

The success can also be credited to public tip-offs as more people seek an end to the drug menace in society, he said.

Overall, there are more drug-related cases, with Bukit Aman recording at least six big hauls.

Last week, some 570kg of various drugs with a street value of more than RM30 million were confiscated in Perak, Johor and Kuala Lumpur, he added. – January 22, 2019.
