THE government’s plan to increase and improve internet reach in rural areas covers the whole country and not merely for Cameron Highlands, and therefore does not breach electoral laws, said Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo.

He said that a team from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) was in Pos Betau to resolve the weak internet coverage after the agency had received a complaint.

“I am looking in the sense that a complaint is made to the agency, not to me.

“There is a meeting taking place in Pos Betau, but again I leave it to the agency to do what they have to do,” Gobind said at a walkabout at a morning market in Kuala Medang today.

Gobind yesterday announced an upcoming project by his ministry in collaboration with Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) to upgrade internet connection across the Jelai district.

His announcement comes as electoral watchdog Bersih 2.0 warned Pakatan Harapan leaders to stay away from campaigning for the by-election within their ministerial capacities.

Gobind said that the joint project between MCMC and TNB was one of several efforts by the commission to increase broadband infrastructure all over Malaysia.

“When there is a complaint regardless of where, then MCMC will go down and try to resolve the issue.” – January 18, 2019.
