39 charges later, Najib still has fans

HE faces 39 criminal charges and is accused of siphoning off billions from state firm 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MBD). Yet to some, Najib Razak is a hero.

Some even consider the ex-prime minister to be a modern-day Robin Hood who through the now defunct goods and services tax (GST) “robbed the rich and gave to the poor”.

Barki Komo, 75, is one of the fans.

He lives in a comfortable three-bedroom apartment in Residensi Kerinchi, the key to which was handed to him by Najib when he was prime minister.

About 500 villagers were moved into the apartments about two years ago when their homes in Kampung Kerinchi were razed to make way for the development of Bangar South.

Najib had handed them the keys to their new apartments two years ago, when he was prime minister.

“My old home was one big living room and a toilet. There were no bedrooms,” said Bakri, of his old flat which was half the size of his current 85sq m apartment.

“To accommodate my four children, I had to erect wooden partitions to create separate bedrooms,” said Bakri, who has lived in the area since 1973.

The former Umno president was in Kampung Kerinchi last night on a road show called “The Legacy of Najib Razak”.

“I came down because I heard Najib was coming. I have the home I live in now because of him and I wanted to thank him personally,” said Bakri

In the roadshow, Najib offers his take on current issues and what he thinks of Pakatan Harapan government that ended his reign on May 9 last year.

“Now I have a lot of time. In the past I was busy running the country. After losing the general election I feel it is my responsibility to go out there and explain to the people what (the Barisan Nasional) did for them,” Najib told the audience at last night’s dialogue.

The Pekan MP resigned the Umno presidency and the BN chair shortly after the general election.

Besides lobbing brickbats at the government, he and his wife Rosmah Mansor are fighting a catalogue of charges of fraud, money laundering and abuse of power, all allegedly committed when he was in office from 2013 to 2018.

Najib is also implicated in the misappropriation of billions from 1MDB, a financial scandal that is under  investigation in six countries.

‘Misunderstood’

But 39-year-old Nazar Osman is not bothered by all that. He believes Najib has helped raise the living standards of rural folk and the working class.

“I believe that Najib’s prosecution is all lies. To me, with the GST, Najib collected money from rich and gave to the poor. That is what I mean by him being Robin Hood,” he said.

“The rich buy Porsche but normal people have to buy Kancil. So the tax on the Porsche is higher. With thw tax he helped the destitute have higher living standards.

“He helped the poor with his wise management of the country.”

A businessman from Kota Damansara, who identified himself as Tango, 40, said he wishes there are more Opposition politicians as brave as Najib in speaking up  for the people.

Tango said that Najib did his best to develop the economy but his efforts were misunderstood and his administration was voted out in GE14.

“It’s like the people are bewitched (by Pakatan Harapan) to the point they cannot think straight. But now they can see that the economy is going down the drain. Business used to be better. The people just do not understand what Najib has done for them,” – January 13, 2019.

  • Some ppl cant & wont accept that he is a kleptomaniac.. when you cant & wont accept the notion, any amount of evidence mounted against the perpetrator, will not make a difference.. Even if the evidence is presented in front of them, they will deny and brush it off and say it is not true!
They will only come to their senses when he is put in jail. Even then some might say that it is injustice.
The best is to leave these ppl alone, and let them carry on with their misguided beliefs. Hopefully, one day, they will realise their misendeavors and come to their senses..

    • All ardent followers of a leader are like that. Ppl who supported Anwar do not believe all the evidence presented in court against him. Up til now, they still believe DSAI is innocent. So, why should Najib's followers be any different. Supporters of Hitler, Pol Pot, Marcos... just to name a few, always believe that what their beloved leaders did was for the greater good.

Those who want to believe in the truth are only a significant few....

  • What a pathetic lot you are to follow a corrupted fellow as your leader who has been identified not only at home but internationally a thief.

  • Frustrations are building up among the people especially the poor so Pakatan Harapan better buck up and get things going as soon as possible. Everything is moving too slowly. The ministers are taking their own sweet time to get programmes and projects off the ground. We only hear talk and talk but dont see any action. Thats why people are starting to get angry. We need the government to pump prime the economy quickly.

  • these people....theirnunderatanding of gst is so wrong. As a consumption tax it has the direct opposition of Robin Hood because everyone gets taxed, including the poor. And the money is stolen to cover up 1mdb hole so end of the day only him and his family, and job low enjoys it. Not the poor. Quite silly.....

  • In Robin Hood, the top bad guy was greedy King John. He kept raising taxes and the poor suffered. History has a kinder take. He inherited a bankrupt country from his brother, King Richard the Lion heart had made England totally bankrupt raising money to finance the Crusade. What else could King John do when he inherited the throne? What do you expect from the PH Government after 60 years of BN rule especially that of Najib's?
