BARISAN Nasional has still not decided who will represent the party in the Cameron Highlands by-election, said acting Umno president Mohamad Hasan.
He said the coalition will leave it up to the component party leadership to decide on the candidate.
“We still respect our component party (MIC) that is in charge of the area.
“BN still hasn’t decided on a candidate. That is a choice for MIC,” he said Umno headquarters after its supreme council meeting today.
Yesterday, the Election Commission announced that the Cameron Highlands by-election has been set for Saturday, January 26.
EC chairman Azhar Harun said nomination day is January 12, while advance voting is on January 22.
The Cameron Highlands by-election was called for after the Election Court last month revoked C. Sivarraajh’s victory in the May 9 general election after it found that he had bought votes.
MIC president S. Vigneswaran said that they will not appeal the election court’s decision to declare the Cameron Highlands seat vacant and the party will field Sivarraajh again.
Mohamad said that since the by-election is in Pahang they have decided that Menteri Besar Wan Rosdi Wan Ismail will be the election director.
“We have also decided that Umno deputy acting president Ismail Sabri will come up with the programmes to help the election machinery.”
Mohamad also said that he will be calling for a meeting with BN leaders to decide on the candidate soon. – December 21, 2018.
