SEKINCHAN assemblyman Ng Suee Lim has lodged a police report against red shirts leader Jamal Md Yunos for allegedly bringing in 7,000 voters into the constituency.
In his report, lodged at the Sekinchan police station today, the three-term DAP assemblyman said Jamal had brought outsiders “in bulk” using “millions of ringgit”.
“This act goes against democratic practices and has denied the rights of the local voters,” Ng said in his report.
Ng based the report on an article by The Malaysian Insight published on July 30.
“We would like to tell the media that he (Jamal) brought in phantom voters at the cost of millions of ringgit.
“This is an irresponsible act that is dirty and disgusting,” Ng said after lodging the report, while flanked by several village heads and party supporters, some of whom were holding placards.
Jamal, who is Umno Sungai Besar division chief, told The Malaysian Insight more than a fortnight ago that it was Ng who brought in the voters to register their address in the coastal town.
“Let him lodge the report,” he said.
“We (Umno) identified what we call Umno DNA. We try to register the children of Umno members. We do not register Chinese or Indian voters.
“In fact, I believe it’s Suee Lim himself who is using this tactic to blame Umno and say we are doing this. Why should I? In fact, I am trying to increase the percentage of Malay voters to help the Sg Besar (parliamentary) seat.”
Chinese and Sabahan native voters were among those registered at addresses on Malay reserve land.
Villagers whom The Malaysian Insight spoke to said they could not recognise many of their supposed neighbours in a draft supplementary electoral roll published by the Election Commission (EC) in the first quarter of this year.
Ng said he had successfully challenged many of the new voters but said the objection process with the EC took up hundreds of hours.
According to EC’s 2013 electoral data, Sekinchan’s 16,247 voters comprise 56% Chinese, 42% Malays and 2% Indians. The Malays are of Javanese and Banjar majority. – August 22, 2017.
