AMENDMENTS to the Road Transport Act include improvements on the process of deregistering vehicles to allow for greater ease in the government’s disposal of abandoned cars, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

Loke said there are about 60,000-70,000 abandoned cars nationwide which have become a big problem for local councils.

“The (local authorities) PBT can’t just tow the cars because their registrations are still valid. I’m afraid if they take away the cars, the owners will then come and claim from PBT,” he told reporters at a press conference at the Parliament lobby today.

The Road Transport (Amendment) Bill 2018 was tabled for its first reading today. – December 10, 2018.
