PKR, in principle, supports anti-racial discrimination but also backs the government’s decision not to ratify ICERD, said PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.

He said the fears of the Malays about the Anti-International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination was likely the result of their own interpretations of the United Nations convention.

“The Malays feared that their special privileges would be undermined if Putrajaya endorsed ICERD,” Anwar said in Kota Kinabalu today.

“PKR has made its views clear on the ICERD at the recent presidential council meeting that, in principle, we support anti-racial discrimination.

“But maybe due to the interpretation of the ICERD, it had caused fear among communities in the country.”

Yesterday, some 50,000 people took part in a rally in Kuala Lumpur to protest against the ratification of the ICERD, despite the Pakatan Harapan government already saying it would not do so.

Anwar, who is also Port Dickson MP, had earlier snubbed an invitation to the rally, reiterating today that there was no need for the rally as the government had decided not to ratify the treaty. – December 9, 2018.

  • We'll believe it when we see it. For the moment, the PH government is backtracking on many human rights commitments, including abolishing draconian laws. The proof of the pudding is in the eating. We hope PH will not turn out to be BN 2.0.
