PAKATAN Harapan parties who fielded candidates in the Rantau state and Cameron Highlands parliamentary seats will contest those seats again in the coming by-elections.
Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who is also Pakatan Harapan chairman, said PKR, which contested in Rantau, and DAP, which constested in Cameron Highlands, will decide on their candidates.
“The parties will remain the same. It is up to them to choose the candidates,” he said after a PH council meeting in Petaling Jaya.
Present were PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, PKR advisory council chairman Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu, DAP deputy chairman Gobind Singh Deo and other leaders.
The candidates, however, will contest under the PH banner.
Last month, the Election Court in Seremban declared former Negri Sembilan MB Mohamad Hasan’s victory in Rantau during the 14th general election null and void, and said a by-election for the seat should be held soon.
Umno’s Mohamad won the seat unopposed after PKR candidate Dr S. Streram was not allowed in the nomination centre because he did not have an Election Commission pass.
The Kuala Lumpur Election Court, meanwhile, ruled last month that corrupted practices were committed to influence and induce voters in the Cameron Highlands constituency with the knowledge and consent of MIC vice-president C. Sivarraajh, who won the seat there.
DAP candidate M. Manogaran had filed a petition to seek that the election results be declared null and void as it had violated the Election Offences Act 1954.
Both Mohamad and Sivaraajh are appealing the rulings. – December 8, 2018.
