AN IT glitch was behind the five-hour baggage delay at Kuala Lumpur International Airport yesterday, said Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB).

In a statement on Facebook, MAHB said a switch for luggage roller belts malfunctioned at 6.45pm due to technical errors.

This caused the system to stop transporting luggage to their assigned aircraft, subsequently delaying five Malindo Air flights.

MAHB responded by immediately using alternate rollers, typically used for oversize luggage, said the statement.

“They used manual manpower to transfer the luggage to the other belt while the issue was being resolved by the IT department.”

The company said the glitch was resolved after about an hour, but due to a backlog in transferring luggage back to the standard roller belts, a delay in routine operations was extended.

“The technical issue was resolved at 8pm, (but) the luggage backlog was only resolved by 12.25am today.”

MAHB said there is a probability that the problem might arise again, adding that passengers will be notified if there are changes to their flight schedules. – December 7, 2018.
